Leaving the 9-5 for the 24/7.

My leap into entrepreneurship.

I often get asked, why after so many years did I decide to take the leap of faith into entrepreneurship. I mean after all I was approaching 40, my husband and I had busy careers, three kids to provide for and for those on the outside looking in, we had a good thing going. And we did.

I am your stereotypical A-type personality. Very goal driven, thrive on being busy, a little feisty and I love to be challenged. I believe that in a nutshell it comes down to the simple fact that I was suffocating in the predictability of my life. My life prior to meeting my husband was anything but predictable, in fact, it was a whole lot of chaos. Perhaps that is why I don’t do well with chill? Alas, that is an entire blog onto itself that I will reserve for a later date.

Having a demanding career, being a wife and mom to three kids definitely provided sufficient challenges, but I couldn’t help but feel as though I was on autopilot. I was going through the motions of life, work, extracurricular actives etc. Through the process, I was becoming very cynical and jaded towards all of it. While becoming a mother has been life’s greatest gift, I began feeling as though I was losing my identity, putting my passions on the back burner.

As my kids grew older naturally they became less dependent, which ultimately as a parent is what we want, to raise independent, strong humans. Among the many phases of parenthood, this one can really hit hard. Time was going by at a light speed rate, my babies were no longer babies and as a result, they grew and needed me less. Although this was a devastating realization, it was also an opportunity to refocus on myself and through that set a valuable example for my kids.

Life doesn’t happen to you, it happens through you.

I believe wholeheartedly in the saying – life doesn’t happen to you, it happens through you. Everything I had experienced in my life up to that point was part of my journey. There were hard lessons and experiences that made me who I am today and without them, I don’t know that I would be doing what I’m doing. For some, the courage to leap came early. For me, it came as I approached my 40th birthday. Friends joke that it was a mid-life crisis, but truthfully I think it was just my time, I was ready.

It was important that I create the life I craved, I wanted to set an example for my kids that it is never too late to follow a dream or passion. Ultimately, my biggest fear was living with the regret of not trying. For the first time in what felt like an eternity I was bursting with excitement!

I always had a passion for hair …

I had a few ideas over the years, but there was one that just kept persisting. I always had a passion for hair and being cursed with a head full of frizz that took more time than I care to admit to manage, I began to envision a place where women could go to unwind and have their hair blown out. But not just any place, a place that had a unique vibe that was welcoming to all women, no matter their hair type, their title or their economic status. An affordable luxury that is accessible to every woman. This is a place that I needed in my life because let’s face it, you are in one of thee camps when it comes to doing your hair – you don’t know how, you hate doing it or are like me and you don’t have the time.

So I had the desire for more, the pie in the sky vision, but there was one giant missing piece – sharing this with my husband! Now it is important to state, my husband is for the most part risk averse, in fact, he works in Risk Management and his job is to assess and avoid risk. But on the other side of the coin, my husband is also my biggest supporter. We are 50/50 partners all the way and I knew that if I could do the work and show him the vision, he would support me.

Fast forward, he was behind me all the way and equally excited to start the planning process! Although he could see the value a place like this could have, he needed to see and understand my vision. Although hair salons are all over Toronto, a place like I envisioned didn’t exist, so we booked some flights and headed for NYC!

To be continued ….

My Journey to Entrepreneurship

Being a female entrepreneur and business owner in Toronto, I am often asked how I started my business – Vent Blow Dry Bar. As I try to give a quick response, I am often left thinking, there is so much more to it that I didn’t tell her and she needs to know!

So I’ve decided to start 2019 by telling my story, the story of how Vent Blow Dry Bar came to be part of Liberty Village and of how I changed my life.

Over the past couple of years I’ve noticed a significant increase in the number of women who dream of changing their lives and having their own business. Women, who like myself, have become tired of working for other people and are dreaming of something better. I’ve also observed the rise in entrepreneurship in Toronto and how many of them are women.

I am only part of the way into my journey but there is so much I have learned and experienced that I want to share. My hope is by sharing my journey it may help other women chase their dreams. It is never too late and never too soon. Through this blog, I will tell my entire story in the hopes it will resonate and inspire other women to take the first step.

But there are a few things I want to start off by sharing: I am not special. I don’t have a business degree from a recognized university, a rich uncle who gifted me a pile of money, a parent who left a hefty inheritance or a rich husband who financed my vision for that matter. This opportunity didn’t fall into my lap and I certainly didn’t just pay someone to do it for me.

What I am is a mom to three amazing children, a wife to a very supportive husband. And I am a woman who in her early forties, decided that I was going to take control of my life. I was determined to live my best life by chasing my dreams of business ownership and realizing just what was possible – no matter the risks. I will share the ups and downs and everything in-between. My husband’s reaction when I first told him I wanted to leave my career and open a blow dry bar! And the impact all of it has had on myself and my family – good and bad.

I hope you will join me on this journey.

Relax and enjoy the experience. Take in the salon’s luxurious atmosphere, close your eyes and relax during the scalp massage and even extend it by adding a treatment. Our wash stations and chairs were custom made in Italy and designed with your ultimate comfort in mind. Watch a movie, charge your phone, Vent with a friend and order a drink from our bar (Nespresso coffee, tea, pop and water are complimentary). This is your time and we want you to enjoy it!

We prepare busy women for work with early morning appointments, provide awesome pre-workout braids and are there for women who are short on time. While Vent serves wedding and bachelorette parties, getting married isn’t required to have an awesome hair experience.

Consider adding makeup to round out your visit and we’ll have you ready for your day. Vent offers makeup services (appointment required) with professionally trained makeup artists.

How to Achieve Your 2018 Goals

As we set out our goals and resolutions for 2018, there are a few thoughts I wanted to share from my own experiences over the past few years that have helped me to change my life and may help you to be successful with your own goals.

After taking control of my life and starting my own business, Vent Blow Dry Bar, a complete change of career for me, and having watched my husband complete his Master’s degree, I have realized there are a few key components that are necessary and can help anyone achieve their goals and dreams.

1) You have to want it and be willing to sacrifice something to get it.

You can’t just kinda want to change your life or improve something about yourself— whether it is your career, education or fitness level—you have to REALLY want it and you have to be willing to go through some discomfort to get it.

For example, when my husband decided to go back to school he had to determine what he could eliminate from his schedule to find the time to study each day. But still be a husband, father, hockey coach and keep a full time career. He cut out time wasted on TV and the internet, and gave up time spent on fitness (his passion is training so this wasn’t easy) and sleep – on average 1-2 hours a day. Using his lunch at work to read and would wake up early on weekends to complete his work so he could spend time with our three kids. He would stay indoors at the cottage and write papers while the rest of us were swimming and enjoying the summer. It wasn’t easy, but for him it was more than worth it. He finished his degree and feels so confident from having met a lifelong personal goal of his.

2) Wishes aren’t worth sh*t.

Ok, so let’s set this misconception straight once and for all—wishes don’t come true. Success, whether financial or fitness (we all define success differently) won’t just happen because you wished for it. However, goals can be met if you make the decision to chase them and are determined to meet them. But simply wishing for something won’t make it happen. You have to decide to make a change and then work on it every single day.

3) Take one day at a time by setting small yet achievable goals – incremental change.

This is so important yet often overlooked. Looking at the end goal or the multitude of tasks or work it will take to get where you want to be is overwhelming. You have to break the work down into smaller daily or weekly goals. As my father-in-law would often say. The time will go by one way or another, you have to decide how to use it. This year, decide to use each day to improve and make incremental changes towards meeting YOUR goals. You will be amazed at the rate daily tasks can multiply. And build incrementally into major accomplishments over the course of a year.

When people look at successful individuals. Whether it’s an athlete or business success. Often all we see is the success and not the hard work that went into it. We don’t see the late nights and early mornings.  The sacrifices that were made or the risks that were taken. Success is not accomplished without the daily, weekly, monthly and yearly focus on meeting your goals.

By deciding to make a change in your life. Identifying the time wasters, making sacrifices and taking one day at a time with an end goal in mind,. You CAN change your life and make it exactly what you want. If I have learned one thing from my journey it’s that you can let life happen around you or take control and make it what you want.

This year, let’s own 2018 and make it what we want for ourselves!

The Most Challenging Year of My Life

While Vent Blow Dry Bar has been nearly a three-year project, watching the final stages of my dream come together in 2017 was incredible and overwhelming.

From the construction process, what seemed like continuous setbacks and cost overruns, permit issues and delays, we somehow made it through and created a beautiful space designed to save busy women time, empower them and build their confidence through a self-care experience unlike any other.

I am so proud of what we have accomplished and have never looked forward to my future with such energy and enthusiasm. However, giving so much of myself to my business has meant I’ve had to make a few sacrifices along the way. Being a mom to three busy kids, a wife to a husband who has his own career and a new business owner meant I had to give up something. As it turned out, my self-care and me time were the first things to go. I know there are plenty of women just like me with busy lives, demanding careers and family expectations, and this past year I have learned how important it is to care for ourselves so we can be there to care for our families, friends and careers.

One of my goals for Vent is to provide a place where women can unwind, de-stress and dedicate some much-needed time back to themselves. I intend to take that approach for myself as well in 2018 and I’m putting out the challenge to all the busy, dedicated, hard-working women out there who have goals, dreams and plans for the year ahead. As women, let’s work hard, play hard, be awesome leaders for the people in our lives and most importantly, dedicate some time for ourselves.

In an effort to encourage women to actually fulfill these goals, I decided to create a fun social media challenge throughout the month on January in collaboration with the amazing, kick-butt women (and men) at 6ix Cycle. For 21 days (the amount of time it takes to create a habit) we will post daily self-care challenges to both our Facebook page and Instagram story, asking all of our followers to join in and show us how they’ve completed the challenge with the official hashtag #TakeItBack21. On January 22nd we will go through all the submissions and choose two lucky winners to have an indulgent self-care day with one of their closest friends.

Creating challenges for yourself is important, but they can be hard to stick to on your own. I wanted to create a community for other women to lift each other up, practice daily self-care and give them the chance to win the luxurious treatment they deserve.

I am making 2018 the year in which I make a commitment to myself to take time for me, to work on my well-being both physically and mentally and to lead other women in this journey. In addition to participating in the #TakeItBack21 challenge, I’ll be posting my experiences as a mom, wife and a business owner and encourage you to do so as well by sharing them with us @ventblowdrybar. I can’t wait to see what 2018 will bring and I hope that Vent will be a big part of your self-care regimen in the year ahead. Five Tips to Longer Lasting Curls

As one of our most requested blowout styles, lasting curls are often considered the hardest to achieve.

Understanding your hair’s texture and how it holds curls is key to mastering this hairstyle and ensuring it lasts. Here are our top five tips on how to extend the life of your curls.

1) Change up your technique.

A tried and true curl-holding trick is to let each curl cool down completely before letting it drop. After each piece of hair has been curled, hold each fresh curl in your palm. Then take a small clip or bobby pin, roll it up and secure it against your scalp. Once it has completely cooled, take out the pins and let down your curls. Letting the hair cool down allows the cuticle to close and set, holding the new curled shape in place for a longer stretch of time. In a time crunch? Once your curls are all pinned, use your hairdryer on cold to speed up the cooling process.

2) Apply less but better products.

Products are essential to the life of any hairstyle, especially to curls. However, the problem is we sometimes get carried away and apply too many products. To avoid overloading your strands and weighing them down, apply products strategically and sparingly. Start with a small amount of mousse or a few spritzes of hairspray before you blow dry, to give your hair some texture (curls don’t love clean hair). Then go in with a heat protectant to save your hair from thermal damage. You can hairspray as you go along with the curling iron, however, it’s usually most effective to mist the hair with strong hold spray right at the end. This allows you to have the maximum amount of time to play with your style before locking it into place.

3) A good stylist should blame her tools.

No two curling irons are created equal, especially if one is cheaply made. Using better quality tools may seem like a large investment at the time, however, they perform better (saving you time) and usually are safer for your hair. If you’ve had curl trouble in the past, the problem was most likely the tools, not your hair. At Vent Blow Dry Bar we incorporate the use of professional-grade hair tools, like the powerful Dyson Supersonic blow dryer and quality BaBylissPro curling irons, to help our clients achieve healthy, lasting curls.

4) Understand your barrels.

Although the length and texture of someone’s hair will react differently to each size, the golden rule is: the smaller the barrel, the tighter the curl. At Vent Blow Dry Bar, we usually stay in the middle ground of barrel sizes and stick to either a 1” to 1.5” barrel. Both of these are not too light where the curl becomes coily, but not too relaxed where the curl lacks definition. These sizes are universally flattering and usually last the longest.

5) Leave it to the professionals.

Still can’t seem to get the hang of long-lasting curls? Let our expert stylists at Vent Blow Dry Bar take all the uncertainty and stress out of creating perfect curls, while you simply sit back and sip a cocktail. With an entire menu of styling services, we have a curl style for every occasion. If you want to keep your new style going for two or three days, we also offer a variety of style extending products (like Moroccanoil dry shampoo) to refresh the hair and keep your curls bouncy for days.
